Here's some info that can help your child’s school year run smoothly.

Medication    Before bringing meds to school, reviewing the following info can save you time.

MILA's Clinic follows guidelines set forth by the Brevard County School Board in collaboration with the Brevard County Health Department.

(See Florida Statute 1006.062)

  1. All medications coming to the schools must be in the original container with the manufacturer/pharmacy label in place.  This includes cough drops and over-the counter medications.

  1. Please do not send loose medication (cough drops, pills, etc.) to school in plastic bags.  The clinic will be unable to administer any medication not in its original container.

  1. The clinic cannot give your child medication if the label has been altered in any way.

  1. Over-the-counter medication can only remain at school for 10 days, unless you have a Doctor’s note to authorize it remaining longer.

  1. Please don’t ask the clinic to give adult dosages on over-the-counter medication.  If the label states “under 12 to get a Doctor approval,” then you will need written approval from the Doctor for it to be administered at school.

  1. Parent permission forms need to be completed for ALL medication to be given at school, including cough drops and over-the-counter medications.

  1. When completing Parent Permission forms, please be aware that your instructions match the label on the medication bottle, or the medication cannot be given.

  2. STUDENTS CANNOT TRANSPORT MEDICATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

  1. All medication will be counted upon arrival at school.  A parent signature is required to verify that the count is correct.

  1. If your child forgets to take a morning dose at home, please be aware that the school cannot give medication without a written note from you.  This can be faxed to the school.

Health & Wellness:  Please consider this...

  • If your child will receive meds at school, please review the Medication Policy listed above.  It is also beneficial to you, if you can bring more than a month’s worth at a time.

  • If your child will need an Emergency Plan of Action relating to health concern such as allergies, seizures or anything else; then it is priority for the clinic to be made aware & a plan of action to be created with you.

  • In the event of an emergency, we need to have the most current information on your child’s health card.   Please contact the clinic as often as needed throughout the year, for this to occur.  Whether it is a change in meds, change in health status and or contact information. The more informed we are, the better we can care for your child.

  •  If your child complains of feeling sick but does not have a fever or any other objective signs of illness upon nursing assessment, your child will be encouraged to return to class after a brief rest in the clinic.  The parent will be called and notified of the status of the child.  If upon nursing assessment a child is found to be too sick to return to class the parent/guardian will be instructed to pick the child up within the hour.

  • Please do not knowingly send your child to school sick.  It will be difficult for your child to perform well and will jeopardize his / her classmates’ health.  Let your child stay home & rest. Remember you can always contact the school for your child’s missed assignments.

*Note: The MILA clinic staff is an employee of the Brevard County Health Department. The clinic staff follows guidelines set forth by the Brevard County School District in collaboration with the Brevard County Health Department. All treatment rendered in the clinic will follow nursing protocols, policies, and procedures.

Thank you,
