School History

MILA was constructed in 1953 and was the first elementary school on Merritt Island. M.I.L.A actually stands for Merritt Island Launch Area.  The space industry was developing in 1953 and many of the first students were children of aerospace industry workers. Since many of the people living on Merritt Island today attended MILA over the decades, there is tremendous community loyalty to the school.

Although the school was built in 1953, the facility has been well maintained.  There have been additions to the school and a major renovation in the early 1990's.  Be on the watch for a "fresh new look" currently taking place as part of Brevard Public Schools' Ten Year Facilities Improvement Plan.
